iPhone 4 Accessory Guide

A few iPhone 4 essentials that will turn your new toy into a weapon of mass entertainment.

So you scored a new shiny iPhone 4 for Christmas, but grandma was too cheap to spring for any accessories.  Well, it’s a common issue, one that can thankfully be addressed with a few simple purchases that are quite easy on the wallet.

The first thing you’re going to want to pick up is a case.  I’m sure like the rest of the world you’ve heard the rumors regarding iPhone 4’s reception issues.  In case you’ve been living under a rock it goes something like this:  Holding the iPhone 4 in a particular manner will cause antenna attenuation that leads to dropped calls and lower signal power.  True?  Yeah, pretty much.  But honestly most phones suffer from the same issue if gripped in a certain way, and anti-Apple folks have exaggerated this issue to the point of reaching urban legend status.  The saving grace here is that with any case that covers the antenna (the slick looking metallic band that wraps around the phone) your big, stupid sausage fingers will cease to strangle the reception from your iPhone.  That’s the first reason you should purchase a case.  The second reason is that you’ll want some shock protection when you’re wife/girlfriend/mother inevitably drops the phone while playing a heated game of Angry Birds.  I prefer lower profile cases like the Incipio Featherweight.  It provides decent protection, covers the antenna, and doesn’t add hardly any size to the profile of the phone.  It won’t keep your phone safe if you drop it down a flight of steel steps, but honestly if you’re that uncoordinated, you probably shouldn’t own a five hundred dollar phone.

So in case you didn’t realize, your iPhone 4 is a multi-media powerhouse.  You can watch videos, play games, take pictures, browse the Internet, and Twitter until your fingers are raw to the bone.  Or should I say tweet?  If you’re a little concerned about the longevity of your battery considering all these processor intensive applications, well, you should be.  Not that the iPhone 4 has terrible battery life, in fact it’s best in class, but if you want to get through the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy on your flight to Tokyo, you’re going to need a battery refresh.  iPhone 4 won’t let you swap in and out fresh batteries, but you can buy a battery case that can nearly double the life of the iPhone 4.  The Exolife Exogear iPhone 4 case is slim, sleek, protects your phone from the elements, and will jolt your phone back to life for a second wind during those long absences from civilization.

Another great feature of your iPhone 4 that you might not be aware of is its ability to output video to your HDTV over a component video connection.  It’s true, you can download movies and TV shows over iTunes or Netflix and view them on the big screen with one simple accessory.  The Apple Component AV cable is an easy recommendation, and a great way to share videos and pictures with your whole family without having to lug around DVDs or a laptop.
