Creating an Eco-Friendly Home Office and Study Space Guide

Think about how often we spend in our home office or study space.  We clip coupons, make list, complete homework, pay bills, read, and often earn our living in our home office space.  We also generate a whole lot of trash in the home office so by creating a more eco-friendly space and environment we can not only cut down on the trash in the landfills but also be a little healthier.

Writing Red, White and Blue Can Be Green

Every home with children (and accountants) requires #2 pencils.  Paper Mate Earthwrite recycled pencils are made from 100% recycled materials from the lead tip down to the eraser. Just think of all the trees saved as well as trash avoided in our landfills.

Using Paper Mate Biodegradable Retractable Medium Point Ballpoint Pens which are available in 4 Colored inks is an eco-friendly alternative to regular ballpoint pens.  Most of the parts of these pens are biodegradeable when disposed of, they don't cost any more than regular pens, and they write just the same.

Have you heard of Elephant Poo?  It is a paper supplier that offers odor free journals, "post it notes," stationary and paper made from pulped and processed dung.  Sure it sounds funny, but it is eco-friendly, sustainable and works just like the regular post it notes, I bet your friends and co workers won't know the difference. Just think of the conversation starter you can have with "Sure you can use the Elephant Poo."

Did you know that recycled paper made from post-consumer waste prevents used paper from going into the landfill?  Look for copy paper with  higher recycled content, there are several available, but Hammermill rates among the highest in paper quality.

Eco-Friendly School and Office Supply Choices

Natural Crayons likes these from Chinaberry are non toxic and made from soy bean oil.  These means less chemicals in the product and the production, as well as created from items that are sustainable and easy to produce.  When they get down to the "nubs" they melt easily to make multi colored crayons to keep using.

Sheers like Kleen Earth Scissors  have black handles that are made from recycled plastic.  Scissors can even be sharpened and used over and over again, meaning less waste.

Earthwise makes 100% recycled portfolio folders and report covers.  They work just like any other cover or folder, but are made with all recycled materials, and cost almost the same.

This Terracycle Denim LapTop Case, is made from recycled materials. But TerraCycle doesn't stop there. They actually pay people to recycle items like juice box pouches.  This denim bag is made from scraps of denim that normally would have just been thrown away.  But the denim is not "used" it is simply the scrap from many famous maker brand name jeans.  Features include: and extendable shoulder strap, a spacious front pocket, a foam padded interior, and a luggage strap for easy traveling.

Go to lunch and keeping it green!

Wrap-N-Mat is made with cotton and can be re-used again and again, avoiding costly plastic bags that just end up in the landfill.  These wraps can be used for sandwiches, fruit and many other items normally stored in your lunch.

Using non-PVC-vinyl–lined bags like the Laptop Lunch and Laptop Bento Kit means you can not only reuse your lunch items over and over again, but you can easily portion control your meals and create your own lunch specials made from (hopefully) locally grown or organic foods.  Cute, useful, available in an assortment of styles and colors they may cost more than a regular lunch box, but they will also last longer.

Need some extra tips for going green in the office?

  • Use both front and back of the pages when drawing, writing, copying or printing.
  • Add spider plants to the office to increase air quality in the office or study space
  • Use shredded documents for packing materials.
It may take more time to find eco-friendly materials but more and more stores and online services are making them available, making stores like Amazon.com and Staples a popular office and school supply choice.
